Body Talk

Listen to the sound of this body
Breathing again –
Wholeness
In gulps and in slow deep breaths.
This body-
An African gypsy
Granddaughter of one enslaved
Breathing.
This body a tangle of
Throat too lung
Stomach too rib
Body too full of air
At the moment
To remember that these feet
Stopped touching the ground
Long ago.
Listen to the sound of this body.
This body has
Swung from trees
Rode across ships
Followed God and thunder
In search of dreams
Birthed babies while still chained
Screaming and enslaved
And now
This body is breathing
With the body
Borne from ancestors
Not that far gone.
Listen to the sound of this body,
Child.
Listen to the sound of this body breathing
Wholeness again.
